The Outback Office is a prefabricated building typology developed for short-term accommodation and hospitality.
The project is one-part advanced manufacturing technology and one-part adaptive reuse of material waste. With a skeleton of marine-grade alloy, the light-weight structure allowed for construction within a sensitive site. This was then infilled with ‘re-loved’ materials. The timber screens are recycled tallowwood left over from a large deck installation – where the striking pattern facilitates using timber offcuts, the front door a manufacturer’s reject from a studio in the NSW Royal National Park, the floorboards salvaged from a terrace in Stanmore, stud walls reconditioned from a church in Newtown, the pine ceiling from a holiday house in the Central Coast, even the desk and chair were a hard rubbish collection find.
