Balmain Boys Don’t Cry explores alterations and additions to an existing terrace in a heritage conservation area in Balmain, Sydney. The project adapts the terrace for contemporary living and incorporates a green roof central to the clients’ vision—an expression of how increasing density and living with less space can still be generous, joyful and full of amenity.
The project involved extensive negotiations with Council, requiring persistence and careful advocacy to retain the architectural intent. Its name borrows former NSW Premier Neville Wran’s famous line, “Balmain boys don’t cry”—a fitting reference to the persistence sometimes required of clients and architects in advocating for good design.
