Borrowed Light comprises alterations and additions to an existing terrace in a conservation area in Alexandria, Sydney. The design is shaped by a simple act of generosity: preserving solar access to its southern neighbour.
Rather than maximising the available building envelope, the upper level and draped roof forms are carved away to allow sunlight through, creating a light-filled void above the kitchen that informs the architecture of the house. The project explores how Sydney’s terrace typology can accommodate greater density while remaining thoughtful of neighbours, daylight and the qualities that make these communities desirable places to live.
